Company Flow- Funcrusher Plus

There are nineteen tracks on this album. The album is one hour and fourteen minutes long. That works out to an average of about three minutes and forty seconds. That’s a little long, but depending on the music that hour and fourteen minutes might end up sounding like forty, that’s just the way music can work. You feel every minute of this album. It sounds like it is EXACTLY one hour and fourteen minutes. But the reason for that sounds good on paper: there is so much good in this album.

The beats are beyond reproach, varying between hard and angry to space age. They’re also simple, old fashioned style beats, a drum, a snare and some kind of effect and that’s it. These beats are just about as pure as beats get. And the LYRICS! Oh the lyrics. There is not a single track on this album that doesn’t have a quotable line. Here are a couple:

  • Hardcore like Kool G Rap music made for concert piano

  • Murder in the ghetto, you murder in a temple

  • [Wannabe gangster] got the El P rookie cards stuck in they bicycle spoke

  • I defy all attempts at logic

  • [When other MCs step to Company flow it’s like] Walt Disney meets Keyser Soze

  • Only a matter of time before Waldo gets spotted

  • Being an MC is like being in break beat Hell

That is just me going through my notes, picking lines at random. I could have easily picked more. And I’m afraid I did them a disservice because to get the full impact you need to listen to the entire song, because THAT’S HOW INTRICATE THESE RHYMES ARE. And that is also why this album feels as long as it does. It is a wall of top notch lyrics. One song has a density of lyrics equivalent to a dying sun. And its not even that its too much. It is impossible to keep up with these MCs throughout this album.

4/5 This is the best rap album I’m not sure if I like. My relationship with it is not great. I view it as a mountain to be climbed, not a cave to be explored. I’d like to change that. My recommendation is to take this album in small sips. Pick any track, they’re all great. Don’t get too bogged down in one song. Treat it like a buffet, because there is so much on offer here.
