Spanish Love Songs- Brave Faces Everyone
It might seem like a good idea to have a great opening line. Something that will really catch the listener and make them want to hear more. But in my experience, a great first line does not necessarily mean it is going to be a great album. What it means is that each song is going to be great, and there is a difference. Take Haunted Gardens by Sadistik. I could do the same thing with this album that I did with that album: quote lyrics and tell you to check it out. Here’s the thing though: I haven’t actually gone back to listen to Haunted Gardens. And in a way it’s because the lyrics were as good as they were. The lyrics were great from the opening. Great in such a way that you knew that that quality would go through the entire album. So great you almost didn’t have to listen to it.
The issue with lyrics like those on Haunted Gardens and this album is that they do not vary in their quality. There are no throwaway lines. After a while, even driving through beautiful mountains can be boring if all you see are mountains. My point is that something great lyrics make you do is perk up and pay attention, but then if that keeps going you try to pay attention to everything. Which you can’t. You end up exhausted trying to keep up. So you either end up listening to one song that resonates with you over and over again, or leaving the album behind. So for this album, I’m going to say listen to one or two songs, find the ones you like and listen to those. That’ll be enough.
I need to tell you what these lyrics are about don’t I? Well the first line is “On any given day I’m a six of ten” and the chorus is “Let me ruin my guts tonight.” My favorite line of the song though is “Am I gonna be this dumb forever?” These songs aren’t about a midlife crisis exactly, it’s more about the feeling of looking around and realized everyone has accomplished more than you, or maybe that everyone is just as miserable as you (“Everywhere I look, it’s just routine pain”). It’s about the time in your life when people are either settling down and getting married, or ODing. These songs are for older people, only a little bit older than me, but the songs still have an enormous emotional impact. I’m only a few short years away from going to weddings by myself and looking at Facebook and finding out an acquaintance is dead.
4/5 I was wavering on whether or not to give this a three or a four, but I’m choosing four because the songs on here are just that good. They pack that much of a punch. The guy’s voice can get annoying, but if you take it in small doses like I recommend, you should be fine. Also in a song that’s not on this album called “The Boy Considers His Haircut” the singer says “I want to find a haircut that fits me/ That hasn’t been co-opted by Nazis” and I’ve never felt more represented in media.
